Container Tracking Innovations: 3PL Adoptions and Implementations
One of the challenges for North America’s intermodal industry over the years is the ability to accurately track and report a container’s status while it is in transit.
And while that has traditionally left third-party logistics companies at a disadvantage compared with other modes of transport that utilize GPS-enabled cargo and equipment-tracking sensors, intermodal has taken steps in recent years to catch up.
3PLs, in particular, have been able to greatly improve their operations and shipment visibility thanks in part to cloud-based software and database platforms, as well as the emergence of web-enabled devices that collect, send and act on data they acquire from their surrounding environments using embedded sensors, processors and communication hardware, technology commonly know as the Internet of Things, or loT.Read more

IMC Companies buys intermodal company, expands national footprint
IMC Companies has acquired TRANSInternational System, an intermodal company based in Worthington, Ohio, that operates intermodal freight terminals in nine U.S. cities, including Chicago, Atlanta, Cleveland and Memphis.
“I am impressed with TRANSInternational’s leadership, history, services, values and team members,” Mark H. George, chairman of Memphis-based IMC Companies, said in a release. “I look forward to welcoming their team into our family of brands.”
IMC will be merging TRANSInternational System’s operations into its companies Ohio Intermodal Services, Intermodal Cartage Company, DNJ Intermodal Services and Atlantic Intermodal Services. (more…)Read more

No easy fix for chassis conundrum: speakers
Issues involving chassis interoperability, shortages, and dislocation continue to hamper productivity at US ports and inland rail ramps, and there is no single solution on the horizon that will make those problems go away, speakers at the Intermodal Association of North America (IANA) conference in Long Beach said this week.
In fact, with each stakeholder in the supply chain — ocean carrier, trucker, railroad, and intermodal equipment provider (IEP) — doing what best serves their own interests, the industry may eventually be forced into the unwanted condition where it has to choose between regulation and free markets before a solution is found, the speakers said.Read more
FMC to gauge detention/demurrage fairness on flow merits
The top United States maritime regulatory agency on Friday unanimously approved interpretive rulemaking recommendations aimed at helping it gauge whether levied demurrage and detention fees truly incentivize the retrieval of cargo and return of containers.
The Federal Maritime Commission agreed to the recommendations stemming from a year-and-a-half effort led by commissioner Rebecca Dye to address complaints from cargo owners and drayage drivers over what they considered unfair fees for failing to pick up cargo and return equipment in a timely manner. Port Report: Sourcing shifts for U.S. imports boosting Southeast Ports
The trade war with China is forcing U.S. Shippers to look for new sources of low-cost consumer goods. Southeast seaports are benefitting from those switches as shippers opt for lower cost and more accessible gateways.
The value of China’s exports to the U.S. are down 12.3 percent through the first half of 2019 to $219 billion. The drop stems from President Donald Trump’s escalation of tariffs against China with another 10 percent tariff slated to take effect this coming September 1 and December 15 on $300 billion worth of imports coming from China.Read more

Kevin Mott uses military experience to help drivers every day
Helping drivers keep their wheels turning is the priority of the Driver Services Department. They are often the people whom drivers call while on the road with questions. They serve as advocates for drivers in their daily operations handling all aspects of roadside repairs, storage, fuel updates, and owner operator tractor repair support.
“Our internal process always starts with listening to what the driver, operations, or a repair vendor needs. Every phone call or email we receive is different because every driver, operations member, or repair vendor is different. Because we tend to know everyone personally, we try to tailor our interactions with them individually to make our support more effective.”
